Hague apostille counter · Γ. Κατεχάκη 56, 115 25 Αθήνα, first floor

Where a Greek public document gets its apostille. Free, open four hours a day, and not at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — which is not an apostille authority at all.

What it will not accept
gov.gr and National Registry certificates The counter requires original wet-ink signatures. Digitally issued certificates take the separate e-apostille route on gov.gr instead.
Who apostilles what
Four authorities, not one The Regions for regional self-government documents; the Decentralised Administrations for public civil service, public-law entity, municipal and registry documents; the First Instance Court for judicial documents; and the Ministry of Digital Governance for electronic documents issued through gov.gr. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not among them.
The rule of order
Apostille first, translate second Stated by the authority itself. Getting this the wrong way round means paying for the translation twice.

Buying property, applying for a permit or setting up a company in Greece all generate the same problem: foreign documents that Greek authorities will not accept as they stand, and Greek documents that foreign authorities will not accept either.

The four authorities

Greece does not have one apostille office, it has four categories of them, listed by the Hague Conference itself. This counter — the Decentralised Administration — covers what most people need: public civil service documents, documents of public-law entities, municipal documents and registry office documents.

Judicial documents go to the First Instance Court at the former Evelpidon school in Nea Kypseli, at a cost of €10 by e-paravolo plus a €3 stamp. Documents issued electronically through gov.gr take the e-apostille route on gov.gr itself.

One conflict we are printing rather than resolving

The Decentralised Administration says documents received through a KEP cannot yet be e-apostilled. The gov.gr service page says they can. gov.gr operates the service and its page is fresher, so it is the likelier of the two — but both are official and we are not going to choose for you.

For the other half of this problem — a document destined for a country outside the Hague Convention, or a foreign consular signature to be verified — the legalisation counter is elsewhere and it has moved.

Three firms, not thirty

We keep a short list of tax advisers and immigration lawyers who have actually run 5A applications to completion, and who answer email. Tell us your situation and we will make an introduction to the two or three that fit it, and tell you plainly where we have a commercial relationship and where we do not.

  • 01 A human reads it. Always.
  • 02 We name names, and we say why.
  • 03 Any commercial relationship is disclosed up front.
  • 04 Nothing you send us is sold to anyone.

Where we earn a referral fee we say so on the page it appears. Nothing in the editorial rankings is for sale. Read the charter.

What is this about?

We reply within one working day. Your details are never sold or passed on without your say-so.
