A Milanese pasticceria founded in 1817, doing pastry, espresso and aperitivo on the quay. The highest-frequency address on the promenade.

A marble table at Cova Astir Marina laid with pastries and an espresso, the moored boats behind.

What it does
Pastry, croissants, espresso, aperitivo Displayed in a window comptoir at the entrance.

Cova opened in Milan in 1817 and is one of the oldest pasticcerias in Italy. The Astir Marina room carries the format across: a window comptoir at the entrance, pastry and croissants, Italian espresso, and aperitivo later in the day.

The highest-frequency address on the promenade

You will buy a watch once. You will buy a coffee two hundred times a year. On that arithmetic this is the most consequential tenant on the quay for anyone who actually lives on the peninsula, and everything else here is occasional.

The aperitivo half matters as much, because it is the one thing on this promenade that gives a reason to be here at seven on an October evening rather than at one on an August afternoon.

We have not eaten here and are not describing the pastry. The rest of the marina is in the pillar file.

A table, and the right one

We do not run a booking service. We do know which rooms are worth a Tuesday, who is cooking rather than plating, and which kitchens will send someone to your house. Ask and we will tell you what we would do.

  • 01 A human reads it. Always.
  • 02 We name names, and we say why.
  • 03 Any commercial relationship is disclosed up front.
  • 04 Nothing you send us is sold to anyone.

Where we earn a referral fee we say so on the page it appears. Nothing in the editorial rankings is for sale. Read the charter.
